People who are considering making an international money transfer in order to live abroad have been advised to visit the country first.

Rhiannon Davies, director of Shelter Offshore, highlighted the fact that Britons can become unstuck when they find that the country of their dreams isn't what they expected.

"Spend time living in a country on a tourist visa before committing to relocating there – and always rent a property before you consider buying so that you can make sure you really do love the country enough to stay," she said.

Ms Davies highlighted Australia as a particularly common country for pitfalls, because many Britons "hope that it will be just like living in the UK only with sunny weather".

"The fact that it is not like that does shock some into returning to the UK."

The comments come as the South Australian government has encouraged Brits to move down under, citing the fact that 60 per cent of British employees are bored with their jobs.

Offers of positions such as a koala-catcher were advertised in a bid to demonstrate the alternative lifestyle available in Australia.
