International money transfers are not the only thing to have helped expatriates in recent years.
New technologies, such as internet-based telephone systems, are proving to be increasingly popular among expatriates who are keen to keep in touch with their families without spending exorbitant amounts on phone bills.
Skype accounted for an estimated 12 per cent of all international calling minutes in 2009, the Daily Telegraph reported.
John Sinclair Willis, who comes from five generations of British expats living in India, has chosen to set up his home in the south of the country.
Mr Willis explained to the news source how he keeps in touch with home: "Though I live in the middle of nowhere, where no postman comes near, I have broadband, a landline and a blackberry.
"If I didn't have those, I think I'd feel very isolated. And I might not be here at all."
