Buying property in the south of Cyprus is "pretty straightforward", it has been suggested.

A lot of formalities are similar to British law when it comes to buying a home in the area and, as in the UK, it is advisable to use an independent lawyer, explained property editor at BuyAssociation Paul Collins.

However, he continued, those buying a house or apartment in the North of the Mediterranean island – perhaps by using an international money transfer system – need to be more cautious as it is less politically and socially stable.

Mr Collins said: "Make sure … [you] check and double check everything legally just to make sure … [you] are buying what … [you] think … [you] are buying."

He concluded expats living in Cyprus do not experience a huge change to their lifestyle as many characteristics of the island are similar to the UK and Brits have been moving there to live for the past 40 years.
