Holiday makers could benefit from ensuring that they organise their foreign currency exchange before arriving at the airport.
This is according to Sarah Munro, head of travel money at the Post Office.
Ms Munro said: "Families can save enough to pay out for some unexpected holiday items if they avoid wasting cash by leaving it until the last minute and changing their currency at the airport.
"They should also take enough holiday cash to cover some unexpected costs, rather than pay out hefty charges for using plastic abroad."
The comments follow a survey conducted by the Post Office, which revealed that overseas charges for credit and debit cards are parents' second biggest holiday rip off.
Roaming charges for mobile phone use was the number one money worry for travellers.
Foreign exchange rates are likely to mean that Turkey will cost more for British travellers, as the lira has strengthened by almost 11 per cent year-on-year.
Instead, the Post Office suggested that families check out Portugal, Cyprus or Greece if they are keen to keep costs down while on holiday.
