A professor at the University of Toronto has suggested that Canada needs higher levels of immigration - a remark that could encourage people to make international money transfers to the country.
In an essay in the magazine Global Brief, Irvin Studin said boosting Canada's population from 34 million to 100 would help the country to become a "proper world power" on the global stage.
He suggested that boosting immigration would lead to stronger national institutions and allow businesses and the civil services to draw from a much wider pool of talent.
"The Canada of 100 million has a far larger national market and the attendant economies of scale and scope for ideas, for debate, for books, for newspapers, for magazines, for all species of goods and services," Mr Studin added.
He claimed that Canada has what it needs to succeed in its aims, including a stable government and "hyper-abundant" natural resources.
The academic's comments come after officials in Canada called on UK workers to emigrate to the country.
Two years ago, Brits were being encouraged to live and work in Canada to help plug the country's skills gaps.
