Thousands of British expats could be making use of international money transfers if they become too sick to work overseas.
Newly-obtained figures published by the Daily Mail reveal that around 10,000 expats claimed incapacity benefit over the course of 2009.
This means that a total of 46 million was sent to Britons living in countries such as France, Portugal and Spain.
However, the statistics, which were released by the Department for Work and Pensions under the Freedom of Information Act, do not indicate how many of the claimants could actually be fit enough to work.
A government spokesman stated that a thorough review of the current system will be carried out.
"We will be reassessing people claiming incapacity benefits to see if they could make the move into employment and we are looking at how this will work for people living abroad," he said.
