David Miliband has said refused to comment on rumours that Labour would impose taxes on expatriates if the party is re-elected next month.
The foreign secretary told Arabian Business that tax matters were an issue for the chancellor of the exchequer to deal with and declined to comment further.
At present, Britons living abroad do not pay income tax on earnings made overseas.
However, other countries including the US do impose taxes on citizens even if they are not resident in the country.
Mr Miliband said: "The chancellor has set out all of the tax proposals that we have and he has set out the justification for them and he has explained the way in which we make our tax decisions, [so] it would be quite wrong for me to start giving further new commentary on that."
He added: "We have been very clear about the taxation regime that needs to exist and we think it is the right one in the interests of the country."
