Britons looking to purchase overseas property in Croatia tend to head for the coasts and major islands, an expert has suggested.

Paul Collins, property editor at online resource BuyAssociation, explains there are a "huge" number of islands off the coast of the central European country which prove popular with people seeking such homes.

Meanwhile, the cultural centres of Croatia, such as Dubrovnik and Split also attract potential buyers.

"Dubrovnik in particular attracts quite high level tourists really. It has become very popular with some of the jet-set," Mr Collins adds.

He also notes there are plans in place to build a number of large resorts and high-class hotels in the region, which is likely to attract even more people to the region.

Mr Collins' comments follow news that Croatia has become the latest country to open up its property sector to foreign investors, meaning that from February next year, they will be able to buy property - potentially financing the move using an international money transfer - on the same terms as local residents.ADNFCR-1995-ID-18922848-ADNFCR
