Britons who move abroad have been advised to keep one foot in the UK.
A special report from Shelter Offshore has advised expatriates not to move abroad in order to run away from problems; but rather to deal with them before leaving.
This will allow expats a safe place to return to should circumstances ever require them to move back to Britain.
The advisory website said: "Please be warned and take note, do not burn your bridges and fly out of Blighty in a blaze of glory and controversy, because one day you might just have to come home again."
It added that hiding abroad from personal difficulties such as debt or family issues, is of no use in the long term.
While moving your money abroad when you leave could make it harder for creditors to follow you up, the website warns that "in this day and age of electronic everything and cross border communication" you will eventually be tracked down.
