Britons looking for a new life in the sun have helped drive a massive increase in immigration to Spain over the past ten years.

According to the latest figures released by the country's National Statistics Institute, the number of immigrants registering to live there has increased by a factor of six over the past decade alone.

As such, around 5.6 million non-natives now call Spain their home, equivalent to 12 per cent of the overall population.

Notably, around 40 per cent of the immigrants now settled in Spain come from other countries within the European Union, including the UK and Eastern Europe.

However, while many Britons are attracted to the country by the relatively laid-back lifestyle and good weather, others, including those from countries such as Romania and those in Latin America, have largely arrived in search of work, with many making use of international money transfers to send money abroad.

Earlier this month, Property Frontiers reported that, once again, Spain has held onto its position as the most popular destination for Britons looking to invest in foreign property.
