Japan is an attractive place to live for people from the UK and North America, but there is still work to be done.
This is the opinion of Hidesato Sakakibara, who wrote in The Japan Times that more people from the US are emigrating to the far eastern country thanks to its "knack for survival".
The country is also attractive thanks to its place at the centre of technological advancements, while its infrastructure and stunning landscape are other reasons for people choosing to emigrate to Japan.
Mr Sakakibara went on to say in the newspaper that there are a number of issues that the nation needs to improve on.
"We need more immigration, more effective leadership, a higher birthrate and stronger laws against discrimination," he commented.
According to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, just 1.6 per cent of Japan's population is made up of immigrants.
The OECD recently predicted that the country's economy would begin to grow at a rate of two per cent by next year.
