The majority of people are planning to embark on a round-the-world trip at some point in their lives, which means they will have to be clued up on foreign currency exchange rates.

Some 61 per cent of respondents to an intotheblue.co.uk survey said they are intending to travel around the world, with destinations in Australia and South America proving the most popular.

The Independent's senior travel editor Simon Calder recommended that, before travellers set off, they should look at what they wanted to achieve during their time abroad.

"There's some great opportunities to explore, probably going east so you get the best value. India is very accessible in terms of airfares," he commented.

"Beyond that I've just seen some great fares to places like Hangzhou and Ho Chi Minh City for up to £450 return. That opens up a great place of the world."

Mr Calder went on to say that Morocco, Egypt and Turkey have increased in popularity in recent months, with all three countries offering favourable foreign exchange rates thanks to their position outside the eurozone.
