UK emigrants can expect a warm welcome if they decide to move to France, Italy or Spain, a new survey suggests.

According to an international poll conducted by the German Marshall Fund (GMF) of the United States, clear majorities of residents in all three nations support the granting of local voting rights to legal migrants.

The poll also showed that respondents who had experienced a deterioration of their "economic situation" over the last year were more likely to express concern over immigration to their country.

Majorities in all of the eight nations surveyed supported the right of "legal immigrants who come to the country to work" to become permanent residents.

This support for emigrants' rights could ultimately increase the number of international money transfers conducted around the world.

Recent data from the Office of National Statistics showed that emigration from the UK stood at 427,000 in 2008.

This total included 175,000 British citizens.
