Former UK residents who are currently living in Singapore have been urged to make international payments to health insurance policies.

Finance resource Investment International recently highlighted diseases that pose a risk to those residing in the country.

Some 18 people have died from swine flu, while others have been struck down by dengue fever.

In addition, last year the region saw a small rise in the number of residents affected by foot and mouth disease.

The publication explained that Singapore's efficient health care system twinned with medical insurance can help expats get the medical attention they need should they contract diseases while staying in the country.

"With good health insurance and sensible precautions, residents usually have very little risk of developing serious medical conditions through infection," said the resource.

Meanwhile, the European Union recently reminded ministers to put adequate plans in place to protect populations from swine flu.
