Brits who spend time abroad may have inadequate health coverage, it has emerged.

Finance specialist InsureandGo recently highlighted research by moneysupermarket.com that showed many UK travellers are unaware of the limits of the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).

Some 51 per cent of Brits did not know that the card only covers essential medical care and does not fund operations in overseas hospitals unless illnesses are extremely serious.

Perry Wilson, founder of the company, said: "It is not like [the] National Health. They will give you the basic medical cover for pain and everything else.

"They will not operate on you unless it is life threatening The EHIC card is for basic medical [care] so they will get you out of bed as quickly as they can."

In order to make sure they are eligible for costly medical procedures, expats may like to make international payments to comprehensive health insurance policies.

Further figures released by moneysupermarket.com reveal that 43 per cent of Brits still believe the defunct E111 form will fund their medical treatment abroad.
