The role of British embassies has been clarified by the Foreign Office following a recent study.

Brits who may use foreign exchange services to finance their visits to international destinations are being encouraged to approach consulates only when necessary.

The research shows that embassies across the world receive enquires about situations that are outside of their remit.

For example, a consulate took a call from a parent who requested that staff from the office help her unwell son pack his suitcase.

Juliet Maric, from the British Consul, Alicante, Spain, "If you have a serious problem abroad - maybe you've been involved in an accident, have lost your passport or are a victim of crime, we can help you."

Embassies can also provide assistance to Britons who have been affected by terrorist events and those that have been imprisoned.

Meanwhile, potential UK emigrants have been urged by Expatica to prepare their children for their moves abroad well-ahead of relocating in order to ensure smooth transitions to new cultures.
