UK emigrants who adopt greener lifestyles could reduce the amount of foreign exchange transactions made in order to fund their living costs, according to a leading newspaper.
The Telegraph recently highlighted the efforts of a British couple living in Spain to weather the recession.
Concerned by exchange rates, Kinga Monica and Peter Hughes were looking to cut their expenses as much as possible when they bought a property for renovation in Almeria.
The pair told the paper they have installed measures that see them living self-sufficiently on the site.
For example, their property harnesses the majority of its energy from solar power, while their wood-burning stove is lit using kindling from their olive grove.
"We have all our needs: television, kitchen gadgets, we even ran high-power drills off the batteries without running out during the building work," said Mr Hughes.
He added that each month the couple need to exchange just £21.50 to run their property.
Meanwhile, the Spanish Tourist Office recently revealed that Brits are continuing to make foreign exchange transactions in the country as they regard it as a "home from home".
