A British expatriate who began a new life in Wellington, New Zealand in 2003 has recently spoken of the affordable housing offered by the country.

In an interview with the Sun, Peter Taylor stated he and his family rented a home for six months prior to purchasing a property of their own.

He said that, at the time of moving, they were "very affordable", but adds that this "is not so much the case now".

"We were able to afford a larger house than we would in the UK," Mr Taylor added, explaining many of the older properties he saw did not have features such as double glazing or central heating.

"However, winters here aren't that severe," he explained.

Concluding, the expat said the quality of life offered by New Zealand exceeds that of the UK.

Mr Taylor's comments followed the publication of research by Alliance & Leicester in recent weeks, which showed New Zealand topped the ranking in terms of cost of living and quality of life.ADNFCR-1995-ID-18930684-ADNFCR
