Should emigres meet "certain criteria", they may be able to argue they have the right to file legal proceedings in the country they consider to be their home, it has been noted.
Writing for online resource British Expatriate Community, sector commentator Frank Arndt explains different countries require different levels of residency in order to allow legal proceedings to begin.
"This question is no small one, because family law can vary enormously between one country and another and the financial implications can loom large," he states.
Mr Arndt explains there is basic rule of thumb which is that people are residents of the country they deem to be their home, adding courts will take a number of factors into consideration when deciding cases, such as how much time is spent in the country and the location of a person's job.
People financing legal proceedings in other countries could find that an international money transfer facility helps them in this regard.
Meanwhile, a couple recently told the Sun that their new life in Spain has so far provided them with a crime-free life.
