Brits who are considering investing in a home abroad need to apply the same criteria as they would for purchasing a property in the UK, it has been suggested.

Robin Wilson, head of overseas at Rightmove.co.uk, explained buyers need to consider the location, character and facilities of the place.

He stated: "If you wouldn't live there, why would someone looking to rent or buy from you?"

Those looking to use an international money transfer system to purchase accommodation in Portugal may want to think about which area might have the best potential for a return on investment.

According to Mr Wilson, the Algarve is a popular destination with tourists, especially golf enthusiasts.

The Silver Coast in the north, on the other hand, is made up of fishing villages and has retained its traditional Portuguese feel.

For those who want to make their pounds stretch further, Mr Wilson concluded it is worth exploring properties inland as they can be cheaper, while still keeping their "authentic charm".
