People planning to make a foreign payment and emigrate in an effort to beat the UK recession should be careful not to be too flamboyant when spending their money because the world is in the grip of a downturn.

People emigrating from the UK may be forgiven for thinking they can relocate to escape money problems, but as the global economy suffers there are few places in the world where people can make a real killing at the moment.

As a result, Shelter Offshore has provided a variety of handy hints and tips to help people who have emigrated on how to save money during the recession.

Some surveys suggest that people who live and work abroad can earn a higher professional salary than if they were doing the same work at home, but with the credit crunch pinching around the world, that so-called 'expat advantage' is getting smaller, the website suggests.

Saving money and cutting down on excesses, such as drinking and smoking, can not only help to cut immediate costs, but could help to reduce the amount being paid for health insurance, for example.

Demonstrating the global downturn, people preparing to make an international money transfer to Australia have been warned that the country is beginning to cut down on the number of workers it is urgently seeking to bring in.

Construction workers are no longer on the country's list of most urgent requirements, following the slowdown in that industry.
