A growing number of Britons are looking beyond traditional destinations such as the US and Europe when planning an international money transfer and are instead making for the Asia Pacific region, it has been claimed.

According to online travel agent Expedia, many Britons are choosing places like Thailand to spend their time, with some making international money transfers to buy property or retire to the area.

Jonathan Cudworth, head of product marketing at Expedia, said: "In the UK, there is a definite trend of customers switching from more traditional US and European destinations to the Asia Pacific region."

He continued: "We have seen good growth in demand for Thailand as customers look for destinations where their spending money will stretch further."

With the pound currently weak against both the euro and US dollar, making an international payment to a destination such as Thailand can be much more economical than taking a trip to Europe or America.

The Royal Thai government recently agreed to exempt the fee for tourist visa applications for a three-month period, effective from March 5th 2009 to June 4th 2009.
