International money transfers could be on the rise as Britons appear to be increasingly interested in overseas property purchase.

According to Rightmove, overseas searches rose by 4.8 per cent in December.

This is despite the fact that the Christmas season usually sees a decline in interest, the website's head of overseas Robin Wilson said.

International money transfers to the US might be particularly popular as the country recorded the highest increase in interest over the month at 16.5 per cent.

Transfers will help property buyers to keep their costs down by avoiding high currency exchange fees often charged by high street banks.

Mr Wilson told Overseas Property Professional that the increase in interest was "unusual".

"I think it was just because it was so horrific outside and people were snowed in," he explained.

"So there was more web traffic generally and people were bored at home and so were feeding the dream of a property in the sun."
