ECB leave interest rates on hold at 4.00%
The ECB conformed to market expectations today and left interest rates on hold at 4.00% following the decision to raise rates in June. In his previous statement, Trichet refused to give clear indication as to the likelihood of further monetary tightening in the months ahead and consequently, attention now turns to this afternoon’s news conference. With the money markets still pricing in at least one more rate rise in the coming months, the market will be looking for confirmation that this remains the case.
